News India Live, Digital Desk: Apple Import Ban: Asia’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Delhi, Azadpur mandi has suspended apple imports from Turkey, which reflects a significant change in business relations in the backdrop of growing diplomatic tension between India and Turkey. This decision has been taken after Ankara’s vocal support for Pakistan in the ongoing geopolitical disputes with India, causing extensive protests across the country.

Traders and vendorsEspecially the trading of fruits has taken a tough stance by boycotting Turkish goods, including apples, as they have described the national interest as the main reason behind their works. This boycott has moved up from the capital to move forward, the markets of other states have also removed Turkish products from their stalls.

Despite the arrival of already ordered goods, no further shipment is expected, as the industry is collectively distance from Turkish suppliers.

Decision to stop apple imports from Türkiye: Mandi President Apple Import Ban

Azadpur fruit market Chairman Meetha Ram Kripalani said, “We have decided to stop all new imports of apples from Turkey. Although already ordered consignments will still come, there will still be no business of apples or other produce.” Kripalani said that this decision has been taken after carefully reviewing the situation, he said that no new order would be given in future.

According to Kripalani, Azadpur Mandi had long given priority to Turkish apple, which reached 1.16 lakh tonnes in 2024. However, he said that Türkiye’s perspective towards India has been disappointed with recent developments.

He said, “We have supported Türkiye’s trade over the years, but the current situations have left no choice for us.” According to Delhi’s merchant associations, “Türkiye’s recent political stance towards India is unacceptable and it has hurt national sentiments.”
