A very interesting turn is being seen in Indian politics at this time. On one hand, while the top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his allies are leaving no opportunity to corner and make the Modi government at the Center uncomfortable by continuously making sharp attacks, on the other hand, the tone of senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor seems to be changing. Shashi Tharoor has been seen standing in favor of the government’s decisions on many occasions, which has intensified the stir in the political circles.
Recently, a high-profile committee has been constituted by Home Minister Amit Shah to investigate the unnatural demographic change taking place in the country. While the entire Congress party is silent on this, Shashi Tharoor has openly welcomed this decision.
Tharoor called the decision important, but expressed a big apprehension
The Central Government’s decision on this entire matter has not yet received any official response from the Congress Party, but Shashi Tharoor has publicly supported it. During an exclusive conversation with a reputed news channel, Tharoor said, “This decision taken by the central government is very important. As a country, we have to deeply understand what changes we are going through at this time. Many kinds of things are happening on the ground. However, I also think that we have to seriously talk about the political impact of this decision.”
Taking his point forward, the Congress MP also gave a big advice and warning to the government. He said, “We have to ensure that this committee provides absolutely accurate and correct data. If the data is incomplete or flawed, then people can misuse it, which can also create a new controversy in the country.”
Home Minister Amit Shah had announced this special committee
Let us tell you that this statement of Shashi Tharoor has come after the big announcement of Home Minister Amit Shah, in which he had talked about forming a high level committee to investigate the ‘unnatural demographic change’ taking place in the country. Sharing information about this decision on social media, Amit Shah had written, “Unnatural demographic change caused by infiltration and other external reasons is a very serious challenge for the present and future of any country. To deal with this challenge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the formation of a committee from the Red Fort on August 15, 2025, which has now been implemented by the government and established.”
Know who is included in this high-profile committee?
According to the official notification issued by the government, the command of this committee has been handed over to very strong hands. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar has been made the chairman of this committee. Apart from him, this team includes many big names of the country:
-

Demography issue and BJP’s stance in border areas
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been prominently raising the issue of population imbalance and change in demography in the border states of the country for a long time. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has many times claimed in public forums that illegal immigration from Bangladesh has completely changed the demography of Assam. He says that if the pace of infiltration continues, then people of Assamese origin will become a minority in their own state.
This problem is not limited to Assam only, but due to the settlement of Bangladeshi infiltrators in West Bengal and all the North-Eastern states, the balance of local population is deteriorating. BJP has been contesting elections in the North-Eastern states keeping this issue at its centre. In recent times, the BJP governments in Assam and West Bengal have sharpened their strategies and intensified their operations against infiltrators. In such a situation, Shashi Tharoor’s justification of this committee from the opposition camp is being considered as a sign of a big political change.
