News India Live, Digital Desk: The temperature has once again risen in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. It may be cold outside, but the political heat is being felt from Lucknow to Delhi. the issue is Detention Center Or what the government is calling ‘holding centre’.

Recently there was news that a special center is being built in Ghaziabad, regarding which the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav Has taken the government to task. In his well-known sarcastic style, he has asked some questions to the government, which may prove difficult for the ruling party to answer.

Let us understand in simple language what Akhilesh is trying to say and what is the real reason for his concern.

“Sir, is NRC coming?”
Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at the government through social media and press and asked – “Is NRC coming sir? Otherwise what is the need for this detention centre?”
His signal was clear. When the Central Government has not yet made any concrete announcement in Parliament or outside about implementing NRC (National Register of Citizens), then why are these buildings being built to imprison people?

Connection of voter list and detention center?
Akhilesh has expressed a very serious doubt. You may remember that in the last few elections, the opposition had alleged that names of people belonging to particular communities and classes had been removed from the voter list.
Akhilesh’s argument is that:

  1. Will the people whose names were removed from the voter list as part of a conspiracy now be detained in these centers on the grounds of not having citizenship?
  2. Is this the government’s new way of intimidating?

He clearly said that the government first snatched away people’s right to vote and now perhaps it is preparing to snatch away their freedom.

“Why the waste of public money?”
The Samajwadi Party President also raised a practical question. He said that if the government feels that some people are living here illegally and do not have papers, then as per the rules they should be deported back to their country.

He asked, “If they are illegal, then why would they be kept in a detention center and given food and water from public tax money? Why keep them in jail? Why not send them out directly?”
According to Akhilesh, all this is being done just to set a specific agenda and create an atmosphere of fear in the society.

What is the Ghaziabad issue?
Actually, the UP government has given approval to build a ‘holding centre’ in Ghaziabad. Officials say that this is for those foreign nationals who are staying illegally even after the visa expires or are involved in any crime. They will be kept here till they are sent back to their country. But the opposition is directly linking it to the preparation of NRC.
