News India Live, Digital Desk: Google to Chatgpt: Nowadays it is a period of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Everyone questions, do research or generate text for hours with chatgpt or other AI models. But have you ever thought that when you ask a small question from Chatgpt, how much energy and resources it consumes in exchange for that answer? A recent research has made a shocking disclosure – a large amount of water is also used to keep the AI models running, which is probably not known to more than half of the people!
Chatgpt: A question and about half a liter of water
According to a shocking report, when you ask for the answer to about 25 to 50 questions from AI like Chatgpt, in this process it estimated half a liter of water ‘P’! Yes, you heard absolutely right – water! This means that about 500 ml of water is consumed for a small question-answer session.
This direct water does not drink the AI model, rather it is spent to keep the entire infrastructure cool on which AI works.
But why does AI want so much water?
Actually, large AI models like Chatgpt do not follow any common computer. They require giant ‘data centers’ to run, which are like big warehouses and are filled with hundreds of thousands and other computing hardware.
-
Heat Generation: These servers and processors consistently perform very heavy computations, which produces too much heat.
-
Cooling needs If these servers are not kept cool, then they will stop working more and will stop working properly or will get spoiled.
-
Cooling with water: Water is used extensively to keep these data centers cool. This water remains in circulation through large cooling towers, which absorb the heat emanating from the server and keep it cool. Some water also gets evaporated, which needs to be filled continuously.
Google’s ‘Pani’ bill: Thousands of gallons daily
This is not limited to only Chatgpt. Technical giants like Google, who use their AI models such as’ Bard) and AI in search engines, also consume large amounts of water.
Reports say that in 2021, Google’s data centers almost daily 15,679,000 liters (Or 4.13 million gallons) consumed more water. In 2022, this figure increased even more daily 21,123,546 liters (5.6 billion gallons) had reached! Google itself has admitted that when users ask him something, its AI model, such as Bard, takes more electricity and water from them.
Unexpectedly large consumption
Even though one AI query is less to hear half a liter of water, but every second millions of people worldwide use AI. Google has a number of search query in billions of daily. When all these are mixed, the total water consumption increases unimaginably.
Not only direct cooling, but a huge amount of electricity is required to run these huge data centers. Water is also used to make this electricity (such as cooling in the thermal power plant, or to run turbines in a hydroelectric plant). Therefore, the use of AI actually releases a double ‘water footprint’.
