After the country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki recently increased the prices of vehicles, now the second largest car company Hyundai Motor India has also given a big shock to the Indian customers. The company has informed in the official regulatory filing that it is going to increase the prices of its entire vehicle portfolio by up to 1 percent from September 2026. Just before the festive season, the continuous increase in prices by these two giant companies of the automobile sector is expected to have a direct impact on the budget of new buyers.
Why did the company increase the prices of vehicles? This big reason came to light
According to Hyundai Motor India, this price increase was necessitated by the continuous increase in input and commodity costs, increase in operating expenses and global geopolitical uncertainties. The company clarified in its official statement that it had been bearing a large part of the rising costs for a long time and was making continuous efforts to keep the impact on customers to a minimum. However, due to persistent financial pressures and increased prices at the supplier level, a limited portion of the additional costs have now had to be passed on to customers through retail prices.
Hyundai’s third price increase in the year 2026
According to analysts of the automobile sector, this is the third price increase made by Hyundai in the current year 2026. Earlier, the company had increased the prices by 0.6% in January and then increased the prices to ₹12,800 in June. Now applicable from September 2026, this new amendment of up to 1% will be effective across all ranges from entry-level hatchbacks to premium electric SUVs.
From entry-level hatchback to premium SUV, everything will be expensive
Hyundai sells a wide range of affordable hatchbacks to high-end premium electric vehicles in the Indian market, with starting ex-showroom prices starting around ₹5.6 lakh and going up to ₹55.7 lakh. After this new decision, the prices of the following major models will increase:
-
Hatchback and Sedan Segment: All petrol and CNG variants of the country’s popular compact car Grand i10 Nios, i20 and mid-size premium sedans Verna and Aura will become costlier.
-
SUV Portfolio: India’s best-selling mid-size SUV Hyundai Creta, micro SUV Exter, compact SUV Venue, 6/7-seater Alcazar and premium flagship Tucson will see an increase in on-road prices.
-
Electric Vehicles (EV): The prices of Hyundai’s flagship all-electric crossover IONIQ 5 (IONIQ 5) will also increase depending on the variant.
Hyundai’s decision after Maruti: Will other brands also increase prices?
In the month of August, Maruti Suzuki had increased the prices of several flagship vehicles of its Arena and Nexa networks—such as the Baleno, Brezza, Swift, Grand Vitara and eVitara—by a range of ₹2,500 to ₹30,000. After Maruti, now with Hyundai announcing a price hike from September, the possibility has increased that other big automakers like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota and Kia may also follow the same path to balance their input costs ahead of the festive demand.
What will be the impact on buyers from metro to tier-2 and tier-3 cities?
This price increase will not just be limited to major metro cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, but will also be felt in the local automobile markets of tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur in Rajasthan, Indore in Madhya Pradesh and Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat. Middle class families planning to bring home a new car on the upcoming auspicious occasions of Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali may now have to spend a little extra on down payment and monthly EMI. Local dealers say that customers who lock the delivery by booking in the last days of August can avoid the possible price increase.
