
Mumbai – A fine of Rs 1.40 crore has been imposed on 87 developers for violating norms issued in Navi Mumbai for developers and contractors to control noise and air pollution. Fines imposed for violating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on pollution at 10 sites in Navi Mumbai’s Belapur, 24 in Nerul, 18 in Sanpada, 7 in Vashi, 6 in Kopar Khairane, 9 in Ghansoli, 13 in Airoli/Digha. . Fine was imposed at the rate of Rs 50 per square meter of plot area.
72 developers have paid the fine, while the remaining have been given eight days to follow the SOP or pay the fine. Till now a total fine amount of Rs 1,40,04,039 has been collected.
In August 2024, NMMC announced SOPs for developers on noise pollution, air pollution and foundation blasting. The Bombay High Court filed a ‘suo motu’ PIL (Public Interest Litigation) on the issue of air pollution and pronounced the order on 11 December 2023. In view of this order, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) prepared a detailed SOP. And on August 1, 2024, the then Municipal Commissioner gave the final approval. A special team of NMMC inspected various sites and imposed fines on them.
An official of Navi Mumbai’s Town Planning Department said that if the violation of SOP continues, the fine amount will also be increased. ‘Stop work’ notices will be issued to repeat violators.
