Environment Minister gave the reason
The Environment Minister says that illegal mining, uncontrolled construction and increasing commercial activities could be the main reason for this incident. The 4-lane road tunnel got the green signal from the Center last year. After this, the central government has not allowed any kind of development work in Wayanad. The purpose of this tunnel was to connect Kozhikode and Wayanad internally. However, the work of this project has not started yet.

For the last 10 years, the state government has accelerated development work without paying attention to these issues. According to environmental officials, the Kerala government has approved mining of three quarries, including a granite quarry, in three years. Following three days of torrential rains, two consecutive landslides occurred in Wayanad on July 30, claiming several lives.

The Gadgil Committee and the Kasturirangan Committee constituted by the Central Government had identified many areas of the Western Ghats as unsafe. However, the recommendations of the committee were also subsumed in development and the result is before everyone in the form of Kerala landslides.
