New Delhi, 01 August (HS). The central government will sell tomatoes at the rate of Rs 50 per kg from Friday to provide relief to the people of Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. The government is currently selling tomatoes to consumers at the rate of Rs 60 per kg through the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Limited (NCCF). Currently, NCCF is selling tomatoes at Rs 60 per kg at 16 places in Delhi-NCR and four places in Mumbai through mobile vans.
According to the data available from the Department of Consumer Affairs, the all India average price of tomato on July 31 was Rs 61.74 per kg. A day before this, the average price of tomato in Delhi was Rs 70 per kg. In fact, last month the price of tomato had gone up to more than Rs 100 per kg. The reason for this was that the supply of tomato was affected due to heat and irregular rains in many producing states.
It is noteworthy that Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi had started the sale of tomatoes at a subsidized rate of Rs 60 per kilogram in the National Capital Region Delhi this week. After this, NCCF has started the sale of tomatoes in Mumbai too.
