Mumbai: The family of a scrap dealer who died in a road accident in 2017 has been awarded Rs. 32.8 lakh by the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) of Thane district.

Tribunal chairman Agrawal ordered the respondent tempo owner and New India Assurance Company Limited to jointly pay compensation with 7.5 per cent interest to five members of the deceased's family. A copy of the order dated July 12 was received.

The tempo owner was not present and hence an ex-parte order was passed against him. The counsel for the petitioner told the tribunal that the deceased Javed Ghuru alias Guru Khan (28) was a scrap dealer in Bhiwandi. On January 29, 2017, he was riding a motorcycle when it collided with a tempo vehicle and he died.

Of Rs 32.13 lakh as compensation for loss of income, Rs 15,000 for funeral expenses and Rs 40,000 for parental rights, the tribunal said the claimants should get interest on an amount of Rs 23.65 lakh, of which Rs 20 lakh should be kept as fixed deposit in the name of the deceased's wife, Rs 7.5 lakh in the name of his parents and Rs 2.5 lakh in the name of his siblings, the order said.
