Flood of documents pours in in extortion case against Arun Gawali

Mumbai: The crime branch told a special court that it was not able to find documents related to the invocation of the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in a 2005 extortion case against gangster-turned-politician Arun Gulab Gawali.

Paulus made this statement in response to the order of Special Judge BD Shelke to produce the missing documents to the Crime Branch. Currently, Gawli is serving his DOB sentence in Nagpur Central Jail and is out on bail in the murder case of Shiv Sena leader and former corporator Kalmakar Jamsandekar.

In 2005, a case of extortion was registered against Gawli and his men in Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan for allegedly threatening to grab property. Gawli's lawyer applied to produce the documents for cross-examination. According to the public prosecutor, these papers were also among the documents lost in the Mumbai floods and are now missing.

The court had earlier given 15 days' time in this case and asked to submit the documents. However, in the last hearing, Crime Branch officials had said that the documents were not available.

If the redevelopment of Ram Shyam Sahakari Awas Samiti is continued, then Rs. 50 lakhs were threatened to be recovered from the builder.

In April, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition seeking early release, citing a 2006 government notification. The Supreme Court stayed the High Court order and put an end to the possibility of early release.
