TV subscription rates can increase by 5 to 8 percent. TRAI had asked to wait till the Lok Sabha elections to increase the rates. Now that the Lok Sabha elections are over, the rates of TV channels can increase anytime.
All broadcasting companies asked Distribution Platform Operators (DPOs) to sign new agreements.
After this, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India asked all broadcasters not to block the signals of those who have not signed the agreement till the Lok Sabha elections. Now TRAI can approve it anytime.
Broadcasters raised rates by 10 per cent in January
In January this year, all major broadcasters increased their channel booking rates by up to 10 per cent.
Viacom 18 increased the rates by 25 percent. This increase is attributed to cricket rights and the increase in market share of entertainment channels. The new rates have been implemented from February itself.
Voting for the Lok Sabha elections was completed on June 1. Apart from this, the election results were also declared on June 4. In such a situation, now all broadcasters will put pressure on the DPOs to increase the rates. Airtel Digital TV has already increased the rates. Other DPOs may also bear the burden of increased rates soon.
