Heavy rains have occurred in some parts of Kerala. In the last 24 hours, some places in Kerala have received up to 8 inches of rain. Cities like Kochi and Thrissur also got waterlogged due to heavy rains. 11 people have lost their lives in various rain-related disasters in the state. Of these, 6 people died due to strangulation, two people died due to drowning, two people died due to lightning while one person died due to wall collapse. Amid heavy pre-monsoon rains in the state, the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert of heavy rain for Thrissur and Ernakulam districts of Kerala, while an orange alert of heavy rain has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts. Kerala Revenue Minister K. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Rajan said that in the last 24 hours, some parts of the state have received up to 20 cm of rain. In the last 24 hours, Kunnamangalam in Kozhikode district received 226.2 mm of rain, Cherthala in Alappuzha received 215 mm, Kumarakom in Kottayam district received 203 mm, Thamarassery in Kozhikode district received 200.7 mm of rain.
He said that the local authorities, fire department, police and revenue department are ready to deal with any untoward incident. Apart from this, two NDRF teams are currently present in the state. Meanwhile, Kochi city was flooded after heavy rains last night. Similar situation prevailed in Aluva city near Kochi, where most of the shops remained closed due to flooding in the market. Apart from this, incidents of falling of trees, damage to roads and general landslides occurred across the state. Currently 223 people have been given shelter in 8 relief camps at various places in the state. These relief camps have been started in Kozhikode, Malappuram, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts.
CM advised the people of Kerala to remain alert
Kerala Chief Minister P. Vijayan advised the people of the state to remain alert. He said in a social media post that heavy rains can cause flash floods in a short time. Urban and especially low-lying areas are flooded. Prolonged rain can also cause landslides. People should be cautious during tragedies that occur in such weather. Tourists from all over the country have also arrived in Kerala due to holidays. However, there is no information about any passenger being harmed so far.
