New Delhi, May 25 (HS). Voting started today for 58 Lok Sabha seats in eight states and union territories in the sixth phase of the general elections. All the seats of Delhi and Haryana are included in this phase. Voting is also being held for Anantnag-Rajouri seat of Jammu and Kashmir. Voting for this seat was to be held in the third phase. Due to bad weather, it was extended to the sixth phase. 889 candidates are in the fray in this phase. The sixth phase includes 14 seats of Uttar Pradesh, all 10 seats of Haryana, eight each of Bihar and West Bengal, all seven seats of Delhi, six seats of Odisha, four seats of Jharkhand and one seat of Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people to participate enthusiastically in the festival of democracy.
The political fortunes of many bigwigs are at stake in the sixth phase. These include former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal (Karnal), former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti (Anantnag-Rajouri), Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan (Sambalpur in Odisha), Union Minister Rao Indrajit and actor Raj Babbar (Gurugram), Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar (Faridabad), former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi (Sultanpur), Manoj Tiwari and Kanhaiya Kumar (North East Delhi) and Naveen Jindal (Kurukshetra).
It is noteworthy that in the 2019 general elections, BJP had won all the seven seats in Delhi and all the 10 seats in Haryana. In this regard, the sixth phase is important for the ruling party. This time Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are contesting the elections together in Delhi. Voting for the last and seventh phase of the general elections will be held on June 1.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the voters of the sixth phase to vote in maximum numbers. He wrote on his X handle this morning- “I request all the voters of the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections to come forward to vote in maximum numbers. Every vote matters and your vote is equally important. Democracy flourishes and looks vibrant only when the public participates enthusiastically in the election process. Along with mothers, sisters and daughters, I especially request the young voters to definitely exercise their right to vote.”
