The political atmosphere of the entire country has become explosive after the President imposed emergency and Governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan’s most sensitive province. Huge dissatisfaction is being seen in the opposition camps from Islamabad to Peshawar. Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) chief and prominent face of Pakistani politics, Maulana Fazlur Rehman (also known as ‘Maulana Diesel’ in political circles) has announced an open rebellion against the government of Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Maulana Fazlur Rehman has termed the decision to impose emergency by removing the democratically elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as unconstitutional, full of dictatorship and a direct attack on the sovereignty of Pakistan.
Addressing public meetings, Maulana Fazlur Rehman rejected the claim of Pakistan Army and Shahbaz government that emergency has been imposed due to terrorism and deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Maulana bluntly said that terrorism is just an upper pretext and protective mask, whereas in reality a hidden economic and geo-political agenda is working behind it. He alleged that the main objective of this entire step is to gain control over the rare mineral wealth and natural resources worth trillions of rupees present in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He revealed that the US Consul General and Western diplomats are constantly making statements regarding investment and access to the kingdom’s minerals. Maulana raised questions as to why American companies are being given direct and exclusive access to Pakistan’s minerals when other foreign and local investors face huge hurdles.
In his speech, Maulana Fazlur Rehman put the Military Establishment and Army Chief General Asim Munir in the dock in an unprecedented manner. Expressing strong objection to the increasing political and institutional interference of the army, he warned that when security agencies leave their constitutional scope and try to run the country’s politics and economy, they themselves will disintegrate under the ‘unbearable burden of power’. He reminded Asim Munir about the historic surrender in the India-Pakistan war of 1971 and the shameful fate of General Yahya Khan and said that one should not make the fool of creating 1971-like situations in the country again. Maulana said that if unrest and insecurity have increased in the country since the era of General Musharraf till today, then it is the result of strategic failure of the security agencies.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman launched a scathing attack on the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling it a ‘fake government’ deprived of the real mandate of the people and a ‘powerless ruler’. He said that the puppet government is dependent only on the will of the army and is destroying the constitutional structure of the country. Along with this, he expressed serious concern over the rapidly deepening economic crisis in the country and the exodus of foreign investors. According to Maulana, neighboring countries are moving ahead on the path of progress whereas due to military intervention, political instability and arbitrary emergency in Pakistan, big industrialists and investors are packing their bags and leaving the country. Unless transparent democracy and rule of law are established in the country, the country cannot come out of the economic abyss.
Now all the religious and political forces of Pakistan seem to be mobilizing on one platform against this step of snatching provincial autonomy by dismissing the government of Imran Khan’s party (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced that his party JUI-F will launch a massive movement from Parliament to the streets against this unconstitutional emergency and the American agenda. He has made it clear that he will not allow Pakistan to become the property of any military dictator or foreign power. Political experts believe that this attack by Maulana can create serious political challenges for the Shahbaz government and the army led by Asim Munir in the coming days.
