This date of 21st October is considered very special and full of bravery in the history of Indian Police. This historic day reminds us of the bravery that took place in ‘Hot Springs’, the inaccessible and extremely snowy area of Ladakh in the year 1959, when a patrolling squad of only 10 brave Central Police Force (CRPF) soldiers was deceitfully attacked by Chinese soldiers with heavy weapons. Despite limited resources and difficult conditions, Indian soldiers, instead of turning back, fought the Chinese army bravely and attained martyrdom while protecting the country’s borders. Since then, every year October 21 is celebrated as National Police Memorial Day in the memory of all those policemen who kept their duty paramount by risking their lives for the internal and external security of the country.
Special parades and tribute meetings were organized on the occasion of Police Memorial Day in the national capital Delhi as well as in the police lines of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur and police headquarters of all the states of the country. Chief Ministers of states, Directors General of Police (DGP) and senior administrative officials remembered the martyred policemen by garlanding their portraits. On this occasion, the families of martyred policemen were also honored in many districts and they were assured of all possible help from the state government. Police administration officials pledged that they will further strengthen the feeling of peace and security in the society by following the path of service, dedication and patriotism shown by the martyrs.
