High-level talks between foreign ministers amid growing Gulf crisis

Amidst the international geopolitics and the smoldering situation in the Middle East, India has presented another strong example of its active diplomacy. Within the last one week, India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Once again a high-level phone conversation took place between Jaishankar (Dr. S. Jaishankar) and the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is clearly evident from this continuous contact that New Delhi is keeping a very close eye on the rapidly changing developments and security equations in the Gulf region. This conversation between the top diplomats of the two countries regarding the ongoing military tension in the Middle East, uncertainty of energy supply and regional stability has taken place at a time when the eyes of the entire world are focused on the delicate situation in West Asia.

During this important telephonic conversation, the two leaders mainly discussed in detail regional security, increasing military conflict and the safety and security of millions of Indian expatriates living in the Gulf countries. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear that India is extremely concerned about the way tensions are increasing in the Middle East, which could jeopardize global peace as well as economic stability. This frequent dialogue by India on the current situation in the UAE, a very close and strategic partner of India in the Gulf region, underlines the mutual trust and close diplomatic coordination between the two countries. India has reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are the only lasting solution to avoid any kind of military confrontation.

Not only security matters were discussed between the UAE and India, but energy security and trade routes were also at the center of this high-level dialogue. Any disruption arising in the Gulf countries has a direct impact on India’s energy needs and crude oil imports. Additionally, both countries have committed to work together to progress ambitious projects such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and secure regional connectivity. The two Foreign Ministers have agreed to further strengthen mutual intelligence and diplomatic cooperation to maintain the smooth functioning of the global supply chain and secure the movement of merchant ships.

In today’s era when the world is burning in the fire of war and conflict on many fronts, India, as a responsible and major global power, is pursuing a policy of balancing with all parties. Be it the crisis in West Asia or other international disputes, India has always firmly stood for ‘peace and dialogue’ rather than ‘neutrality’. Holding high-level talks with the UAE twice within a week is proof that India is playing the role of an active mediator and reliable partner not only to protect its energy and economic interests, but also in efforts to restore global peace.

There are likely to be many more rounds of meetings at the diplomatic level between India and UAE in the coming days. Both the countries are together trying to ensure that the situation in the Gulf region does not deteriorate further, so that the interests of Indian citizens and other expatriates working there are not harmed. This prompt and far-sighted diplomacy of India not only reflects the maturity of its foreign policy, but also proves that India stands shoulder to shoulder with its friendly countries in every phase of crisis.
