The Union Cabinet has taken a historic step to make the country’s Public Distribution System (PDS) completely digital and transparent. The new ‘Sarthak-PDS’ scheme has been officially approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. This step of the government is going to prove to be very helpful for crores of ration card beneficiaries of the country, which will not only stop wastage of food grains but will also ensure that ration is delivered to the right person at the right time.
Huge budget of ₹25,530 crore for the next 5 years
Giving information about the cabinet decisions, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told the press conference that the government has allocated a huge budget of Rs 25,530 crore for the next five years to smoothly implement this ambitious scheme. The main objective of this huge budget is to streamline the movement of government food grains distributed to beneficiaries across the country and to strengthen and modernize the infrastructure of fair price shops (ration shops).
AI system ‘Nirmal’ will do real time monitoring
The biggest feature of this new scheme is the inclusion of state-of-the-art technology in it. According to the Union Minister, a special Artificial Intelligence (AI) system has been designed for round-the-clock live tracking and real-time monitoring of the entire distribution system, which has been named ‘NIRMAL’. For this, a separate special provision has been made in the budget. This AI system will keep a close watch on the transportation of grains from warehouses to ration shops, so that problems like black marketing and shortfalls can be completely controlled.
The face of fair price shops will change, beneficiaries will benefit directly
With the implementation of ‘Sarthak-PDS’ scheme, there will be a big change in the working style of the government machinery and the quota holders engaged in the ration distribution system. Under the new system, fair price shops will be equipped with digital equipment, which will remove technical problems in food grain distribution. The government’s direct focus is on ensuring that poor and needy families neither have to stand in long queues to get their share of food grains nor is there any scope for corruption at any level.
