News India Live, Digital Desk: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge amid voting in the second phase of assembly elections in West Bengal. NIA teams have created a stir by conducting simultaneous raids in 7 sensitive districts of the state. This activism of the central agency amidst long queues and heavy security arrangements at the polling stations has increased the heat in the political circles. The purpose of this action, being taken on the instructions of the Election Commission, is to root out the network of possible violence and explosive materials that may occur during the elections.
These 7 sensitive districts of Bengal are on the radar of NIA
According to sources, NIA teams are camping in a total of seven districts including South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly, Bardhaman and Kolkata. Those areas have been identified in these districts, where large quantities of crude bombs and illegal weapons were recently recovered. Especially in areas like Bhangar and Malda, the central agency is keeping a close watch. The agency is trying to find out whether these explosives were meant to be used to influence voting or create panic among voters.
Recovery of 79 crude bombs increases concern
The real link of this action of NIA is the recent ‘bomb incident’ related to North Kashipur area of Bhangar. About 79 crude bombs and a large quantity of explosive material were recovered from here. On the instructions of the Home Ministry, NIA has taken over the investigation of this case. During the investigation, shocking information has come to light that just before the elections, work of making bombs on a large scale was going on. Central security agencies are now on the lookout for the ‘masterminds’ who are conducting these activities from behind the scenes.
Political mercury high: dispute between ruling party and opposition
The politics of Bengal has completely heated up due to the activism of NIA on the day of voting. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has termed this action as a ‘political conspiracy’. The party alleges that central agencies are being used to intimidate voters and disrupt the elections. At the same time, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed this step. Opposition parties say that the presence of central agencies is very important to conduct fair and violence-free elections.
Three-tier security cordon and NIA vigil
The Election Commission has made it clear that any kind of violence will not be tolerated. While on one hand more than 1000 companies of paramilitary forces are deployed for security, on the other hand the presence of NIA has further strengthened the ‘preventive’ action. It is being told that NIA teams are not only conducting raids, but are also closely investigating the suspicious locations along with the bomb disposal squad. Now everyone’s eyes are on what other big revelations emerge in these raids.
