For the academic session of 2026, the number of seats in all 23 IITs of the country will increase to approximately 19,000 Expected to reach beyond. Meritorious students will be selected for these seats through JoSAA counseling to be held after the JEE Advanced examination.

Indian Institutes of Technology have laid special emphasis on expanding their capacity this year. In old institutes like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi as well as in new institutes like IIT Palakkad and IIT Bhilai, the seats have been increased after the development of infrastructure.

JoSAA counselling: The process may start from the second week of June
After the completion of JEE Advanced 2026 examination and declaration of results, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will start the counseling process. According to experts, the work of registration and choice filling can start from the second week of June. Counseling will be conducted in a total of six rounds. Students have been advised to prepare the priority list of colleges and branches according to their rank, so that there is no mistake at the time of counselling.
Emphasis on new courses: Rules changed considering future needs
This time many IITs have started interdisciplinary courses apart from traditional engineering branches. These include topics like digital health, sustainable energy and robotics. Check before locking: Re-check the order of your choices frequently before locking the choices, as once locked, changes will not be possible.
