News India Live, Digital Desk: We all know that Lord Shri Krishna is an ocean of love and compassion. But, there are some such stories also hidden in our Puranas, where a different form of them is seen. There is one such story when he put one of his devotees through such a ‘difficult test’ that even a common man would feel heartbroken.

This is the story of King Mordhwaj and Arjun’s broken pride. Come, let us know this hair-raising saga.

Arjun’s illusion and Krishna’s smile

The war of Mahabharata had ended. Pandavas had won. Gradually it became ingrained in Arjun’s mind that there is no greater devotee of Shri Krishna than him in the whole world. They started thinking that because they had done so much for God, they were the best. Shri Krishna, who is the inner being, was watching this growing ego of his friend and companion Arjun. He knew that there is no place for ego in devotion.

One day God said to Arjun, “Come, today let me introduce you to one of my true devotees.”

Sadhu’s disguise and strange demand

Krishna and Arjun disguised themselves as sages and reached the kingdom of King Mordhwaj. King Mordhwaj was famous for his charity and religion. When the king saw the sages, he welcomed them with great respect and asked what service they could do for him.

Krishna (in the guise of a sage) said, “King, this lion of mine (tiger in some stories) is very hungry. But the problem is that it does not eat common meat. It will be satisfied only when it gets the meat of a boy, whom its parents themselves cut with a saw and feed it. And yes, the condition is that while cutting, not a single tear should fall from the eyes of either of them, otherwise it will not eat.”

time of severe testing

Arjun was also stunned after hearing this. How can any father do this? But King Mordhwaj and his wife did not go back from their devotion and promise. He called his own son ‘Tamradhwaj’. Imagine that scene, a parent was placing a saw on the head of a piece of his own liver.

The one tear that changed everything

As soon as the king and queen started cutting the son with the saw, a horrifying scene appeared. Then the sage (Krishna) saw that a tear was dripping from the left eye of the boy (Tamradhwaj).

Krishna immediately stopped his hand and said, “Enough! I cannot accept this. This boy has tears in his eyes, which means he is sad and is being forcefully sacrificed. My lion will not eat food given with a sad heart.”

Son’s answer and Arjun’s surrender

Then what Tamradhwaj said to that half cut body shook Arjun standing there. The son said-
“Lord, this tear is not of sorrow. It is because the right part of my body is serving you (getting salvation), but the left part is unfortunate and will be thrown away. I am sad that my whole body could not be used in your service.”

On hearing this, the veil was removed from Arjun’s eyes. He understood what surrender means.

real form of krishna

Seeing such devotion of the devotee, Shri Krishna could not control his tears. He immediately returned to his true form. He brought King Mordhwaja’s son back to life and embraced him. He explained to Arjun that a devotee is not one who just stays with him, a devotee is one who remains content with God even after losing everything.

This story teaches us that God tests us only for our good, so that we come out brighter and brighter like gold.
