News India Live, Digital Desk: War of words is not a new thing in Indian politics, but sometimes some questions are asked which hit the target directly. Something similar has happened with AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi. Owaisi Sahab has an old dream. He often says from the stage, “Inshallah, one day a girl wearing hijab will become the Prime Minister of India.” This sentiment of theirs sounds good, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has now raised a serious question on it.
BJP’s direct challenge: ‘Leave PM, make him president’
As soon as Owaisi repeated his statement, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took charge. He has given such a ‘challenge’ to Owaisi, which has sparked debate. BJP’s statement is very clear, “Owaisi ji, you want to see a Muslim woman on the highest post of the country (PM), which is a good thing. But please tell me, are you ready to give the post of president of your own party to a ‘woman wearing hijab’?”
This question is also prickly because for decades the command of AIMIM has been in the hands of the men of the Owaisi family. BJP sarcastically asked whether charity i.e. good work should not start from home?
‘Protest in Parliament, support outside?’
BJP did not stop here. Shehzad Poonawala also reminded Owaisi of his old ‘record’. You will remember when the historic ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ giving 33% reservation to women was brought in the Parliament. At that time the whole country was celebrating, but only two MPs in the Parliament opposed it. Both those MPs were from AIMIM.
BJP’s argument is that when in reality the opportunity came to give women participation in power (reservation), then Owaisi Saheb opposed it. And now in speeches they want ‘Hijab wali PM’. People are seeing this as just an election gimmick and double standards.
Owaisi’s silence and noise on social media
At present, no concrete response has come from the Owaisi camp on this sharp attack, but people are having a lot of fun on social media. Users are asking will Owaisi really be able to show such a big heart in his party? Or is the talk of ‘Lady PM’ just to garner applause?
In politics it is easy to say and difficult to do. BJP has now put the ball in Owaisi’s court. It will be interesting to see whether he catches it or ignores it and moves ahead.
