If you also live in Delhi-NCR and often use Yamuna Expressway or Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, then this news is very important for you. In view of the dense winter fog and increasing danger of accidents, the government has taken a big decision to reduce the speed limit of vehicles on these two expressways. This new rule will come into effect from December 15.

Now if you do not control the speed of your vehicle, you may have to pay a heavy fine. This step of the government has been taken to prevent accidents due to low visibility and slippery roads in winter.

How much will the speed limit be reduced?

Under the new rules, there have been major reductions in speed limits on both expressways:

  • On Yamuna Expressway:
    • Light vehicles (cars, bikes): Now they will be able to run at a speed of only 75 km/h instead of 100 km/h.
    • Heavy vehicles (buses, trucks): Now they will be able to move at a speed of only 60 km/h instead of 80 km/h.
  • On Noida-Greater Noida Expressway:
    • Light vehicles: Speed limit has been reduced from 100 km/h to 75 km/h.
    • Heavy vehicles: Speed limit has been reduced from 80 km/h to 50 km/h.

This reduced speed limit will generally be applicable from December 15 for the next two months (approximately till February 15).

Rules even stricter for commercial vehicles

The police has also issued some special and strict instructions for commercial vehicles:

  • They will have to strictly follow the new speed limit, otherwise strict action like confiscation of the vehicle may be taken.
  • It is mandatory for all commercial vehicles to install reflector tape.
  • Vehicles without reflectors will not be allowed to enter the expressway.

How much will the challan be deducted?

Now overspeeding is being dealt with strictly in Uttar Pradesh.

  • There is a fine of ₹1,000 for breaking the rules for the first time.
  • If the same mistake is repeated, the fine increases to ₹ 2,000.

Another important thing, Noida and Lucknow now have state-of-the-art speed trap cameras installed, which not only measure your speed at one place, but also record your average speed during the entire distance. These cameras are directly linked to the registration data of your vehicle. Therefore, if you delay in filling the challan, there may be problems in registration renewal of your vehicle and updating of other documents.

Therefore, next time whenever you go on these expressways, do check the speed meter for your own and others’ safety.
