Mumbai: A fierce fire broke out after midnight on Saturday at the Enforcement Directorate office at Ballard Estate in Fort area of South Mumbai. The fire department said that many documents, files and furniture were destroyed in the fire. The ED is currently investigating whether the files of several cases pending in the courts have been destroyed and whether this fire was really or was the work of the vested selfish elements, which has created many doubts. However, there was no immediate response from the ED regarding the fire.
The office of the Enforcement Directorate is located on the fourth floor of the five-storey Kaiser-e-Hind building at Ballad Estate in Fort area of South Mumbai. A sudden fire broke out on the fourth floor at around 2.30 pm on Saturday. After receiving information about the fire, the fire department team immediately reached the spot. Since the fire was highly intense, initially it was declared a second level fire.
To overcome the fire, eight fire engines, six jumbo tankers and an aerial water tower tender arrived. 108 ambulances were also present in the event of someone burning or injured in the fire. Fire personnel had to struggle for about two hours to extinguish the fire. But since flammable substances such as documents, files, furniture etc. were present in the office, it spread. Finally, around 4:30 am, the fire department declared the fire level three.
About ten hours after the fire, it was completely controlled at around 12 noon on Sunday. Since it was Saturday and today it was Sunday, all the offices of the building were closed. Therefore, no person burnt in the fire incident, nor was anyone injured during the fire fighting campaign.
However, according to the sources of the fire department, the fire had spread throughout the office. In which wood items, documents and files were burnt to spread huge quantity of smoke. Smoke was taken out by breaking the windows of the offices.
Wooden furniture, cabinets and electrical appliances were damaged by the fire. Additionally, many office equipment and documents of ED were completely destroyed. The files and documents which have not yet reached the fire, were destroyed by the fire department’s ten -hour water showers. As soon as the news of the fire spread from morning itself, various reactions were seen on social media. People had expressed apprehension that the fire on the night holiday is suspicious when the Enforcement Directorate is investigating several cases. It is expected that the office of the main agency of the Central Government, such as the Enforcement Directorate, where bribery scams are investigated, should have adequate fire protection and especially important documents, files, statements of criminals, evidence etc. should be protected in a fireproof place. In such a situation, questions are arising whether any important case file has also been destroyed in this fire. The official statement is awaited by the Enforcement Directorate in this regard.
