Formation of task force to ensure safety of students
The Supreme Court has formed a task force headed by a retired judge to ensure the safety of students in the campus. A bench of Justice JB Pardiwala said that in the last two months, many students committed suicide due to sexual harassment, ragging, discrimination and other reasons in college hostels. The Supreme Court said that on March 19, a student committed suicide at Gujarat National Law University.
Suicide due to sexual harassment, ragging, educational pressure
The bench said, ‘A similar incident took place in IIT Patna last month. The student committed suicide due to educational pressure. Apart from this, a Nepali student lost his life at Odisha Engineering College. In the incident, a classmate was accused of sexual harassment and blackmailing. A student committed suicide due to ragging at an engineering college in Kerala.
‘Suicide pattern should be discussed’
Justice R.C. Mahadevan said that we should discuss the pattern of suicide. We are worried that many students are committing suicide due to discrimination, ragging and sexual harassment. A task force has been formed to work closely with the university and the parents of the students to determine the guidelines for suicide prevention efforts. This task force was led by retired Judge S.K. Ravindra Bhatt will do it. The task force consists of Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Secretary, Department of Social Justice, Secretary of Women and Child Development Department.
Order to submit the report to the task force within four months
The Supreme Court has asked the task force to detect the reasons behind the suicide of the students and submit a report within four months on the steps taken to stop them. In 2023, two students committed suicide in the hostel in IIT Delhi. The parents of the deceased appealed to the Supreme Court and alleged that they took this step due to exploitation in the campus. The police did not even register an FIR in the incident and closed the case citing a legal investigation.
Supreme Court reprimanded police for not registering a case
The Supreme Court said that if the parents of the deceased students had alleged exploitation, the police should have registered an FIR. The closure of the case after investigation is not enough. The court said that such an investigation would only be able to find out how the death occurred, what were the reasons behind the suicide.
