Kolkata, 22 October (Hindustan Reporter). 84 fishermen from West Bengal have been detained in Bangladesh, on which state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed deep concern. In a press conference held from the State Secretariat Nawan on Tuesday afternoon, the Chief Minister gave an important message to Bangladesh on this issue. Mamata Banerjee also reminded Bengal of its long and close relations with Bangladesh.

The Chief Minister said that the first two trawlers had mistakenly crossed the Bangladesh border, in which 36 fishermen were aboard. He has been kept in a jail in Bangladesh. Expressing regret, Mamta said, “It is not known whether they went intentionally or unknowingly, but despite this, three more trawlers reached there, in which there were 48 people. They are also in jail.” Mamata Banerjee expressed hope that with the cooperation of Bangladesh these fishermen would soon be released. The Chief Minister also informed that some time ago a trawler of Bangladesh had sunk in the Bengal border, all its fishermen were released without documents, whereas our fishermen have Aadhaar cards.

Referring to Bangladesh as a 'friendly' country, Chief Minister Mamata said, “Bangladesh is our friendly country. There is cultural exchange between us and we speak the same language. Even though equations change from time to time in politics, I hope that relations between the two countries will improve again. If the border countries maintain good relations among themselves, it will be beneficial for everyone.”

It is noteworthy that West Bengal and Bangladesh have had good relations for a long time and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also had a very good friendship with former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, now there have been political changes in Bangladesh and Dr. Mohammad Yunus is the head of the interim government in place of Sheikh Hasina, due to which there have been some changes in the relations between the two countries. Mamata Banerjee expressed hope that relations between the two countries will soon become as strong as in the old times.
