593 men, 95 females and a third gender candidate, 23 candidates have assets more than Rs 50 crore

Three of the five richest candidates participating in the Delhi Assembly elections are from BJP. BJP candidate from Shakurbasti, Karnail Singh, who is the richest among 699 candidates, is about Rs 260 crore. According to analysis by the Non-Profit Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), which works on electoral reforms, this time the financial background of the candidates is seeing huge inequality. Five candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 100 crore, while three candidates have described zero assets.

According to electoral affidavits, some candidates have ‘zero’ assets, most of which are 41–50 age groups, and the oldest candidates are 88 years old. Out of a total of 699 candidates, 324 have received education from fifth to 12th. ADR has analyzed the affidavits of all the candidates and released a detailed report on Monday, which gives information about the financial position and educational background of the candidates.

23 candidates have assets more than Rs 50 crore

According to the report, 23 candidates declared assets worth more than Rs 50 crore, while 222 described their movable and immovable property less than Rs 10 lakh. The 2020 election saw an increase in this number when 13 candidates declared assets worth more than Rs 50 crore. This time a total of 699 candidates are in the fray. The other four billionaire candidates include BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa (Rs 249 crore), Congress’s Gurcharan Singh (Rs 131 crore), BJP’s Pravesh Verma (Rs 116 crore) and AAP’s A Dhanwati Chandela (Rs 110 crore).

B.J.P. At the forefront of giving tickets to rich candidates

Sirsa and Chandela are contesting from Rajouri Garden, while Gurcharan Singh has filed his nomination from Krishna Nagar and Pravesh Verma from New Delhi seat. Among the lowest assets candidates, Ashok Kumar (Independent) has stated assets of Rs 6,586 and Anita (Independent) has stated assets of Rs 9,500. The average assets of the candidates show that the BJP candidate is the richest with assets of Rs 22.9 crore on an average, while the Congress candidates have an average of Rs 14.4 crore and AAP has assets worth Rs 11.7 crore.

29 illiterate candidates

The ADR analysis also found that there are 235 candidates in the age group of 41-50, while 19 candidates are 70 years or older. Only 46 candidates are 25-30 years of age, two of whom-Bhavna (Independent) and Harshad Chadha (Bahujan Samaj Party) are 25 years old. Out of 322 higher -educated 322 candidates, 126 are graduates, 84 professional graduates and 104 post graduates. Eight candidates have a doctorate degree, while 18 have diploma. At the same time, six candidates have declared themselves literate without formal education and 29 candidates have described themselves as illiterate.
