Five bridges on the Narmada River have been completely closed after a serious bridge accident in Gujarat. 21 people were killed in this accident, after which the state government has taken this step. In addition, the movement of heavy vehicles on four other bridges has been banned, while 36 other bridges have been ordered to be immediately closed for repair.
Technical inspection of Narmada Canal bridges
According to Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL), the Narmada Canal Network has a total of 2,110 bridges connecting national and state highways as well as rural roads. To assess the current status of these bridges and prevent potential damage, a wide inspection campaign was recently carried out by SSNNL. During inspection, 5 bridge vehicles were found to be dangerous for movement and they have been closed. Of these, 2 bridges are located in Morbi district and 3 in Surendranagar district.
Impact of severe bridge accident
On 9 July, a part of a 40 -year -old bridge collapsed near the Gambhir village connecting Anand and Vadodara districts. Many vehicles fell into the Mahisagar river in this accident, killing 20 people. After this incident, the state government took immediate action and conducted a technical inspection of the bridges of the Narmada Canal Network.
Repair work going on at war level
Under the instructions of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the work of repairing damaged roads and bridges due to heavy rains has been started on a war footing. The state government has started repairing the internal roads of villages, towns and cities as well as national and state highways. In addition, a comprehensive plan is underway to make the bridges of the Narmada Canal Network sustainable.
