Mumbai: Nine people were crushed to death after a dumper driver rammed into people sleeping on the footpath at Kesanand Chowk in Wagholi in Pune area on Sunday midnight. Three people including two children died in this accident. Six other people were injured. In this case, the police have registered a case of negligent driving against the dumper driver and arrested him.
The incident occurred on the footpath of Wagholi area around 12.55 am on Wednesday. One year old Vaibhav Pawar, two year old Vaibhav Pawar and 22 year old Vishal Vinod Pawar died in the accident. While 21-year-old Janaki Pawar, 18-year-old Rinisha Pawar, 9-year-old Roshan Bhosale, 27-year-old Nagesh Pawar, 18-year-old Darshan Vairal and 47-year-old Alisha Pawar were seriously injured. The injured people were residents of Amravati. He came to Pune two days ago with his family for labor.
According to eyewitnesses, the dumper driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Hence he lost control of the vehicle and rammed the dumper directly on the people sleeping on the footpath. In which nine people were buried. Other people somehow saved their lives by running away.
Police have arrested dumper driver 26-year-old Gajanan Totre in this case. It is being investigated whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident or not.
According to a police officer, at around 12 o’clock on Sunday night, 12 people were sleeping on the footpath near Kesanand Phata area. Most of them were labourers. So some slept in huts along the footpath.
The injured in AK Smart were admitted to Sassoon Hospital for immediate treatment. The doctor said that the condition of three of them is now critical.
According to preliminary police investigation, the accident occurred when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle. Police arrested the truck driver from the spot.
Police registered a case against the truck driver under the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving.
