A very inspiring and unique success story in the agriculture sector has come to light from Jamui district of Bihar. Two real brothers from Singarpur village—Kanishk Kumar Gupta and Ram Prasad Gupta—have broken the conventions of traditional farming and successfully cultivated exotic and premium variety of mangoes. On the basis of modern technology and new thinking, both the brothers have transformed their family ‘Pushpavatika Nursery’ into a high-tech model, which has today become a source of inspiration for the farmers of entire Bihar.
2 to 12 different varieties of mangoes are growing on the same tree.
The biggest feature and center of attraction of this Pushpvatika nursery are the unique plants prepared with the modern technique of grafting. Both the brothers have surprised everyone with their skill by growing 2 to 12 different varieties of mangoes on the same mango plant. Farmers and agriculture experts from far and wide are reaching Singarpur village to see this unique wonder and modern horticulture.
Chose modern farming instead of job, gave a new look to father’s nursery
About 40 years ago, his father Shatrughan Saav had laid the foundation of this nursery on a very small scale. When Kanishk and Ram Prasad grew up, instead of wandering in search of jobs, they decided to pursue their ancestral land and work. Both brothers underwent rigorous scientific training in horticulture and grafting from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). After this, he set a great example of self-reliant farming by upgrading the traditional nursery with modern and foreign technology.
18 inch banana mango and world’s most expensive ‘Miyazaki’
According to Kanishk Kumar Gupta, the soil and climate of Jamui has proved to be very favorable for the production of these exotic and premium mangoes. These special varieties are currently yielding fruits in his nursery:
-
Banana Mango (Thailand): This variety from Thailand is long and looks exactly like a banana. The length of one mango is about 18 inches and its weight ranges from 800 grams to 1 kilogram.
-
Miyazaki Mango (Japan): This world famous ruby-red mango of Japan, which is sold for lakhs of rupees per kg in the international market, is now growing successfully in Singarpur, Jamui.
-
Apart from this, famous varieties of India and abroad like Malda, Dussehri, Amrapali, Cashew Mango, Kaiser, Bengal Tiger and Maharashtra’s famous Alphonso (Hapus) are also being produced in the nursery.
Initially made fun of, now the target is to have 50 foreign varieties
Recalling his days of struggle, Ram Prasad Gupta said that when he initially started experimenting with growing different types of mangoes on the same tree and bringing in foreign varieties, the local people used to laugh at him and make fun of his idea. But he did not give up and today the same people are praising his global success. The next goal of both the brothers is to make more than 50 rare foreign varieties available to common Indian farmers at affordable prices. Along with this, he is also doing research on medicinal and commercial uses of mango seeds.
Annual profit of ₹12 lakh; Gave advice on ‘ridge gardening’ to farmers
Today, after deducting all the expenses, the Gupta family is earning a net annual income of around Rs 12 lakh from this modern nursery. Both brothers advise other farmers to adopt fruit plants along with traditional paddy-wheat cultivation. He says that farmer brothers can increase their income manifold by planting saplings of these precious mangoes on the boundaries of their fields. This success of these young farmers of Singarpur village proves that if there is right training and determination, big money can be earned by doing world-class farming on the soil of Bihar.
