News India Live, Digital Desk: There is often a debate among teachers teaching in colleges and universities whether it is mandatory to have a Ph.D. degree to get promotion or higher pay scale? Or should long-term experience be sufficient? Now the High Court has completely cleared this confusion.

Court’s decision: No rights without degree!

The High Court has made it clear in one of its recent decisions that to get Higher Academic Grade Pay (Higher AGP) PhD degree is a mandatory qualification Is. If a teacher does not have this degree, he cannot claim higher salary as a ‘right’.

The court said that to maintain the quality of higher education, it is necessary that the teachers themselves are educated to the highest level. Simply put, experience alone will no longer increase your salary slab, you will have to complete your degree through research and study.

Green signal given to AICTE rules

The matter became more serious when the rules of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) were invoked. The High Court accepted that if regulatory bodies like AICTE set any standards, then it is the responsibility of every institution and teacher to follow them. The objective of these rules is to raise the level of technical education.

Many lecturers were hopeful that their grade pay would automatically increase after a few years of service, but the court has completely rejected the idea of ’automatic promotion’ or pay-hike.

What effect will this have on teachers?

This decision will have a direct impact on thousands of teachers who have been teaching on adhoc or regular basis for a long time but do not have a PhD. Now they have only two options:

  1. Either they start research work and complete their PhD.
  2. Or they will have to be satisfied with the same old salary and grade pay that they have at present.

This order can become an example for the educational structure of not only Uttar Pradesh but the entire country. Higher education institutions will also have to strictly implement this in their appointment and promotion process.
