News India Live, Digital Desk: If you want to make your career in the field of research but difficult exams like NET or GATE are coming in your way, then this news is for you. The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has made a revolutionary change to its PhD programme. The institute has announced that certain categories of students will not only be exempted from the entrance exam but will also be able to take direct admission without qualifying NET/GATE.

Who will get direct entry without examination? (Eligibility Criteria)

As per the new rules of IIIT, the path to direct admission to PhD has been made easier for the following students:

Students from reputed institutions: If you have done graduation or post graduation from IIT, NIT, IIIT or any other reputed institute (like CFTIs) and your CGPA 8.0 If your score is more than 1000, you can apply without entrance exam.

Experienced Professionals: Special relief has also been given to experienced professionals working in the corporate sector or research labs, who have good research experience.

Academic Records: Some special relaxations have been added to the selection process for students who have had an excellent academic career (10th, 12th and graduation).

PhD without NET/GATE: What is the process?

Generally, UGC NET or GATE score is mandatory to pursue PhD from any reputed institute, but IIIT has now expanded its scope:

Interview based selection: Students who are exempted from the written examination will be called directly for ‘Personal Interview’.

Innovative Projects: If you have a patent or an excellent research project, the institute will give you preference.

Self-Sponsored Category: The option to pursue PhD without GATE score is also open for working professionals under ‘self-sponsored’ mode.

Why is this a big opportunity for students?

This decision will prove to be a game-changer for those talented students who are very technically proficient but due to some reason could not score well in competitive exams. This will promote ‘research culture’ in the country and produce high quality researchers.
