For nine days of Navratri, we worship the nine different forms of Maa Durga with great reverence, keep fast and make every effort to please the mother. But this nine -day practice is considered incomplete without a very important ritual – and that is Virgo worship,
Often people play it as just a tradition, but do you know what its spiritual significance is and why it is so important?
What is the real meaning of girl worship?
Kanya Pujan is not just a ritual to provide food to young girls, but it is a symbol of calling Sakshat Devi to her house and hurting them. It is believed in our scriptures that among the girls of 2 to 10 years, Mother Durga resides and she is the pure form of energy.
When we call these girls to our house and wash their feet, put them on the pedestal, worship them and feed them with love, then we are actually worshiping the same holy form of Maa Durga. This is the greatest honor of female power and divinity.
Where did this tradition start?
The roots of the tradition of Kanya Pujan are associated with mythology. According to a legend, when Maa Durga appeared from the glory of the gods, all the goddesses gave him their powers. In this way Maa Durga became the most powerful female power of the universe. Kanya Pujan is a way of honoring the supremacy of the same female power.
Another story is associated with Mahrishi Markandeya, who told that the easiest path to please Maa Durga is to serve and worship small girls. Since then this tradition has been going on.
Why is Navratri without it incomplete?
The fast and worship of Navratri is a penance, and Virgo Pujan is the last stage to get the fruits of this penance. Just as Purnahuti is given at the end of a yajna, similarly the fasting of Navratri is fulfilled by feeding the girls and their blessings. It is believed that as these girls, Maa Durga herself comes to our house and accepts our fast.
So this Navratri, when you call girls to your home, do not consider them just a part of a tradition, but consider them as the form of Sakshat Devi and worship them with full devotion and respect.
