This day dedicated to Lord Vishnu is a symbol of self-purification and mental peace. Date and auspicious time of Ekadashi in March 2026

According to the Panchang, two Ekadashi fasts will be observed in the month of March. The first Ekadashi will fall in Shukla Paksha and the second in Krishna Paksha. According to the scriptures, the beginning and ending time of Ekadashi Tithi is extremely important, because the right time of Parana (breaking of the fast) determines the completeness of the fast. Devotees are advised to observe fast as per Uday Tithi. To get the blessings of Shri Hari, continuous chanting of the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya’ on this day is considered fruitful.

Why is cutting and washing hair prohibited? Know the mythological reason

According to religious beliefs, along with purification of the body, purification of thoughts is also mandatory on the day of Ekadashi. It is said in the scriptures that cutting hair, cutting nails or washing the head is prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. It is believed that doing this reduces the prosperity of the house and one may have to face financial crisis. Especially for married women and men observing fast, it has been said that it is mandatory to follow these rules. If you do this out of ignorance, your resolution of the fast may be hindered.

What to do and what not to do during Ekadashi fast?

People observing fast on Ekadashi should consume Satvik food from the night of Dashami Tithi. Consumption of food, especially rice, is completely prohibited on the day of fasting. Charity has special significance on this day; Lord Vishnu becomes extremely pleased by donating food or clothes to the poor as per his capacity. Also, one should avoid getting angry, lying or criticizing anyone on this day. Night vigil and Kirtan increases the effect of Ekadashi fast manifold.
