What’s cooking in the neighborhood? Secret meeting of American diplomats with Bangladeshi Jamaat increased India’s tension

News India Live, Digital Desk: The heat from the fire in the neighborhood often reaches our home also. This is why whenever there is some movement in Bangladesh, it is natural for India to be alert. But this time the news is a little more serious. There is talk that American diplomats are increasing closeness with the leaders of Bangladesh’s fundamentalist party ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ and a round of meetings with them is going on.

The question is, why is a country which talks about democracy suddenly becoming so soft towards a party with fundamentalist ideology? And why is this a matter of concern for India?

Chessboard for 2026 elections
The situation in Bangladesh has completely changed after the removal of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Now eyes are on the 2026 general elections. In such a situation, America’s talking to the leaders of ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ clearly indicates that it is considering them as a big player in future politics.

The US Embassy says that they are talking to all stakeholders so that the elections are fair. But considering the old history of ‘Jamaat’ and their fundamentalist thinking, this argument is not acceptable to everyone.

Why did India’s ‘headache’ increase?
The borders of India and Bangladesh are connected to each other for thousands of kilometers. India’s stand on Jamaat-e-Islami has always been clear—it is a group that is considered anti-India and has often been linked to fundamentalist groups.

If the influence of Jamaat increases in power in Bangladesh, it may create a threat of instability in the north-eastern states of India. In the last few years, Sheikh Hasina’s government had taken great care of India’s security concerns, but now the changed situation has become a new challenge for Delhi.

A new diplomatic dilemma
Are the interests of America and India different on the issue of Bangladesh? This is a great question. On one hand, India wants stability and security there, while on the other hand, America’s strategy is probably cooking something different.

Political experts believe that increasing American interference in this part of South Asia can spoil the equations not only of Bangladesh but of the entire region. Now it remains to be seen what way India finds from its diplomacy box to stop this growing influence and changing winds.

At present, it seems that the war of 2026 is being fought not only in the fields of Dhaka but also on the tables of Washington and Delhi.
