News India Live, Digital Desk: Today i.e. on 21st March 2026, the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr (Sweet Eid) is being celebrated with great enthusiasm. This is the reward for worshiping Allah after the 30 sacred days of Ramadan. In Islam, the happiness of Eid is not limited only to the loved ones, but there are strict instructions to include the poor and needy section of the society also in it. This is the reason why before Eid namaz ‘Zakat’ And ‘Fitra’ It is considered a duty (obligatory) for every able-bodied Muslim to pay.
Fitra (Sadaqah-al-Fitr): A means to include everyone in happiness
Fitrah is the obligatory charity that is given before the Eid prayers. Its main objective is to ensure that no poor person remains hungry on the day of Eid and that too he can celebrate the festival with new clothes and dishes.
How much has to be paid: Fitra is equivalent to the value of approximately two and a quarter kilos (2.175 kg) of wheat, barley, dates or raisins per person. According to the market price of 2026, various committees have decided its minimum amount.
Who gives: The head of the household pays Fitra on behalf of every member of his family (including small children and the elderly).
Time: It is considered best to give it in the last days of Ramzan or before going to Eidgah for Eid prayers.
Zakat: Two and a half percent of your savings
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. This is a donation given on the year’s savings and property.
Rule: If a person holds more than a ‘certain amount’ (Nasab) of assets (gold, silver or cash) for a year after meeting his needs, he will be required to pay Rs. 2.5 percent (two and a half percent) It is mandatory to give share to the poor.
Importance: Zakat means ‘to purify’. It is believed that by paying Zakat, a person’s wealth becomes pure and economic balance is maintained in the society.
What is the main difference between Zakat and Fitra?
Often people get confused between these two, although the rules for both are different:
Essentials: Zakat is obligatory only on those whose property is equal to ‘Nasab’ (fifty two and a half tola of silver or seven and a half tola of gold). Whereas Fitra is obligatory on every person who has more ration or property than his needs on the day of Eid.
Time: Zakat can be given at any time of the year (people often give during Ramadan), but Fitra is given only at the end of Ramadan and before the Eid prayers.
Objective: Zakat is meant to remove long-term poverty, while Fitra is meant to share the immediate happiness of Eid.
To whom can this donation be given?
According to Islamic Shariat, Zakat and Fitra money can be given only to those who are entitled to it. These include the poor, orphans, widows, people in debt and travelers. This money cannot be given to one’s parents, grandparents or children. In the modern era, many people also deposit it in charity institutions, hospitals and madrassas so that they can collectively help the needy.
