Weather Update 17 October 2026: Rain alert in 18 states of the country including South India, mercury dropped in Delhi-UP; Cold increased due to snowfall in the mountains

A sudden major change is being seen in the weather patterns across the country. Due to the combined effect of the departing South-West Monsoon, new weather system active in the Bay of Bengal and Western Disturbance, two opposite forms of weather are being seen in different parts of the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of rain and thundershowers in about 18 states and union territories of South India, Northeast and Central India on Saturday, October 17, 2026. On the other hand, with the onset of the first snowfall of the season in the north-western Himalayan regions, cold north-westerly winds have knocked in the plains. In Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, Kanpur and areas of Delhi-NCR, the feeling of pink coolness has started increasing rapidly in the morning and late evening, while the speed of fans and ACs has started slowing down.

According to the latest bulletin of the Meteorological Department, monsoon rains are raining with full force in the states of Peninsular India. Due to the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, an alert of heavy to extremely heavy rain has been issued in many districts of Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. There is a possibility of strong winds at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, lightning and torrential rains in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The administration in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Udupi of Karnataka has issued advisories at the local level in view of the waterlogging situation in low-lying areas. Fishermen have been instructed not to go into the sea as there is a danger of high waves in the coastal areas.

Due to the active western disturbance in the hilly states, snowfall is being seen in the higher areas and rain in the lower areas. Light snowfall has been recorded in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Rohtang Pass of Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Chamoli and Kedarnath-Badrinath peaks of Uttarakhand. The minimum temperature in Manali has fallen below zero, while in Srinagar too the night temperature has dropped to around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists say that the direct effect of this snowfall and rain on the mountains will be seen in the plains of North India within the next 48 to 72 hours, due to which the temperature may fall by an additional 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

After the recent light rains in the national capital Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram, there has been moisture and coolness in the atmosphere. According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi may remain partly cloudy on October 17 with light drizzle at some places or winds at a speed of 20 to 30 km/hour. The maximum temperature of the day is expected to be around 31 to 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature of the night has dropped to 18 to 19 degrees Celsius. Light haze is being seen in the morning and with the changing weather, a slight change in the pollution level (AQI) has also started. From October 18 onwards, the weather of Delhi is likely to be completely dry and the sky will remain clear.

The weather is expected to remain mainly dry in most parts of Uttar Pradesh today, although partly cloudy sky will persist in some districts of Western and Central UP. In the capital Lucknow today, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be around 21 degrees Celsius. In Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Bareilly and Meerut, there is mild sunshine during the day and coolness in the evening. The weather is also expected to remain clear in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur of the neighboring state of Bihar, where the day temperature is being recorded at 32 degrees and the night temperature is being recorded around 21-22 degrees Celsius. However, due to local weather pressure in some parts of Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad of Jharkhand, there may be light rain with thunder in the afternoon.

In this period of change in weather, when there is sunshine during the day and coolness at night, health experts have given special advice to prevent seasonal diseases. Cases of viral fever, cold and throat infection are increasing mainly in children and elderly people. It has been advised to avoid direct fan air while sleeping at night and start using light warm clothes. Additionally, those planning to travel to the hilly areas of Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh during the festive holidays have been asked to proceed only after seeing the latest weather advisory from the local administration and disaster management in view of landslides and slippery roads.
