The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has taken the biggest and historic step ever to increase transparency and accountability in the administration of the country’s most prestigious civil services examination. For the first time, the Commission has taken a policy decision to release the Provisional Answer Key of Civil Services Prelims Examination 2026 immediately after the completion of the examination. It is known that UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam 2026 is going to be held on 24th May 2026. The Commission issued an official statement on Monday saying that this revolutionary step has been taken with the aim of increasing transparency in the examination process and keeping the highest standards intact. Lakhs of candidates preparing for Civil Services were demanding for a long time to release the answer key immediately after the exam, which has now been accepted. This new system will provide an excellent opportunity to the candidates to make an accurate preliminary assessment of their performance and lodge objections in time.
The period of uncertainty is over, now students will be able to decide their future plans immediately after prelims
This policy change of UPSC is going to be of great benefit to more than 5 lakh candidates appearing for the examination every year. Let us tell you that under the old system, the Commission was making public the answer keys of the Prelims exam only after the entire selection process i.e. the final result was declared. Due to this, there was uncertainty among the candidates whether they would be able to clear the cut-off or not, and whether they should focus on Mains or start preparing for next year’s Prelims.
Civil Services aspirants had also been complaining for years that they had no means to challenge possible mistakes or controversial questions made by the Commission in the preliminary examination. Since every year only 12 to 15 thousand candidates out of more than 5 lakh candidates qualify for the main examination, this answer key will help the candidates to plan their career effectively. However, the Commission has made it clear that the final answer key will be released only after the final result is declared.
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar said- “This is a new beginning of greater transparency and accountability”
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar has termed this arrangement as a ‘new beginning’ for the country’s administrative examination system. He said that for the first time in the history of the Commission, the provisional answer key of the Civil Services Examination is going to be released immediately after the examination. He further said, “This unprecedented initiative reflects the Commission’s continuous efforts to ensure greater transparency, prompt communication and accountability towards the future of the country i.e. the candidates.” Kumar explained that the objective of this policy is to make the entire examination process more participatory, while also maintaining its sanctity, fairness and high merit-based structure.
You will be able to lodge objection online till 31 May 2026, these steps will have to be kept in mind
Commission Chairman Ajay Kumar said that any candidate who disagrees with any question or answer of the provisional answer key will be able to register their objections online till 6 pm on May 31, 2026. For this, candidates will have to visit the special digital portal of UPSC. ‘Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)’ Will have to be used. This portal will be made available live on the official login website of UPSC https://upsconline.nic.in/login within the time limit.
These 3 authentic evidences will have to be given to lodge objection, expert team will review

The experts will carefully examine each objection, evaluate the evidence given by the candidates and file their final report on the accuracy of the answer keys to the respective questions. The final answer key will be prepared only after disposal of all these objections.
This year there are 933 vacancies in civil service and 40 vacancies in forest service.
This year, eligible officers will be recruited on a total of 933 posts through UPSC Civil Services Examination, while 40 vacancies have been released in the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination. It is noteworthy that UPSC conducts this examination every year at the national level in three stages – Prelims, Mains and Interview to select officers for the country’s top civil services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
These 3 biggest changes of UPSC CSE 2026, on which everyone will keep an eye
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) face authentication becomes mandatory: From the year 2026, a new security blanket is being added to all the recruitment examinations of UPSC including Civil Services. Now all the candidates entering the examination center will be compulsorily subjected to ‘Face Test’ i.e. AI Face Authentication. This state-of-the-art AI system is not only capable of instantly detecting dummy candidates and fraudsters appearing for the exam, but it is also much faster and accurate than traditional manual checking. With this, the sanctity and confidentiality of the examination will be more secure than ever before.
2. Disabled candidates will get the examination center of their choice: Keeping in mind the social concern and sensitivity, this time the Commission has given big relief to all the disabled (PwBD) candidates. From now on, every disabled candidate will be allotted only the preferred and first exam center chosen by him for the examination, so that he does not face any inconvenience in travelling.
3. Strict ban on taking exams repeatedly to improve rank: The rules have been made very strict for the candidates who have already passed the Civil Services Examination and are working in prestigious services, to appear in the examination again. According to the new service rules, any officer currently serving in the post of IAS or IFS will not be considered eligible to appear for CSE-2026. If a candidate gets appointed to IAS or IFS post after clearing the preliminary examination this year, he/she will not be allowed to appear in the main examination. Similarly, if someone is appointed after the main examination but before the result, then he will not be considered for any other post on the basis of the result of CSE-2026.
