A very unique and interesting sight has come to light from Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh. Where the farmers, worried about the lack of sufficient rain this season, conducted the marriage of a frog and a toad with proper music and full rituals to get a good harvest and freedom from the fear of drought.

Interestingly, right in the midst of this unique traditional marriage, the Meteorological Department (IMD) has also given great relief to the food providers of the state. After about three days of laziness and laxity, monsoon has once again become completely ‘super active’ in Chhattisgarh. According to the latest estimates of IMD, there is a strong possibility of heavy to moderate rainfall in many parts of the state for the next four days.

Wedding card printed as per rules, ‘frog procession’ accompanied by band and music

  • Invitation letter: For this unique wedding, invitation cards (wedding cards) were printed and distributed in all the nearby villages.

  • Rounds and rituals: On Thursday evening, a grand procession of the groom (frog) was taken out with bands, drums and traditional Chhattisgarhi folk songs. After this, the frog-frog marriage was organized amidst Hindu Sanatan rituals, seven rounds and Vedic chanting.

The belief is to please Lord Indra: Ramnath Singh, senior member of the organizing committee, said that whenever there is heavy rain in the area or drought-like conditions arise, this ancient folk tradition is performed. The villagers strongly believe that the sound of frog-toad mating pleases the rain god Indradev and immediately showers nectar. After the marriage, a collective feast (Bhandare) was also organized for the happiness and prosperity of the entire area.
