Banks will remain closed for 4 days between tomorrow and 30th August! From SBI to PNB, check RBI’s holiday list before visiting the branch.

If you are planning to go to the bank branch in the coming days to clear a check, make a draft, deposit or withdraw cash, update KYC or settle any important financial work related to locker, then this news is very important for you. According to the official bank holiday calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks are going to remain closed for a total of 4 days between August 24 and August 30 due to festivals and weekly holidays in various states and circles.

Since bank holidays are decided based on the local festivals and traditions of different states, be sure to check your state-wise holiday list before leaving home so that you do not face any inconvenience.

On which dates will banks be closed between 24th and 30th August?

According to the list of holidays notified under the Negotiable Instruments Act of the Reserve Bank, the details of holidays in the coming week are as follows:

  • 25 August (Tuesday) – 1st Onam / Milad-e-Sharif (Eid-e-Milad eve): Bank branches will remain closed in Kerala and some selected southern and coastal circles on this day.

  • 26 August (Wednesday) – Eid-e-Milad (Baravfat / Milad-un-Nabi) / Thiruvonam: Banks will remain closed in most of the states and major cities of the country (like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Chennai etc.) on account of the birthday of Prophet Mohammed and the holy festival of Thiruvonam.

  • 28 August (Friday) – Rakshabandhan / Shri Narayana Guru Jayanti / Pang-Lhabsol: There will be a holiday in banks in many states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Kerala and Sikkim on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, the holy festival of brothers and sisters, and regional festivals.

  • 30 August (Sunday) – Weekly holiday: Sunday will be a regular weekly holiday in all government, private, foreign and cooperative banks across the country.

Why is it important to understand the difference in state-wise holidays?

Often there is a misconception in the minds of customers that if a bank is closed in one state then the branches will be closed in the entire country. The RBI divides bank holidays into three categories—holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays and annual closing day of bank accounts.

Festive holidays (such as Onam or local Guru Jayanti) are applicable only in the banking circles of the respective states, while on national holidays (such as Independence Day or Republic Day) all banks across the country remain closed. Therefore, the holidays of August 25 and 28 are state-specific, while the impact of August 26 and August 30 will be almost nationwide.

These digital services will continue to operate even if branches are closed

Despite closure of physical branch operations, modern digital banking services for customers will remain fully active 24×7:

  • UPI and Net Banking: Online fund transfers through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and bank apps will continue as normal without any interruption.

  • IMPS and NEFT: Digital facilities of Online Immediate Fund Transfer (IMPS) and NEFT will work round the clock even during holidays.

  • ATMs and Cash Deposit Machines (CDM): ATMs and cash recycler kiosks of all banks will remain open for cash withdrawal.

  • Mobile Banking Apps: Self-service facilities like balance check, bill payment, FD/RD opening and card block can be done anytime from the Bank’s official mobile app.

Keep these things in mind before going to the bank

If your work requires the physical presence of the branch manager or counter clerk—like making large drafts, submitting government challans, signature verification or paperwork related to loan disbursal—then plan and get these tasks done in advance on the normal working days of Monday (24th August) or Thursday (27th August).
