Kolkata, 11 November (HS). In the proposed organizational restructuring in Trinamool Congress, there is a plan to pay special attention to East Medinipur district, the stronghold of West Bengal opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari. According to a senior party leader, the reorganization is likely to have a major impact on this district as the ruling party had a weak performance in the region in this year's Lok Sabha elections.
In this election, due to the popularity of Subhendu Adhikari, the Bharatiya Janata Party wrested both the Lok Sabha seats of the district, Kanthi and Tamluk, from the Trinamool Congress. Party insiders say that along with the performance of the heads of some municipalities of East Medinipur, the work of two ministers of state from this district is also on the radar of the party leadership, as the Trinamool Congress had lagged behind in the Lok Sabha elections in their assembly constituencies.
Trinamool Congress general secretary and party's Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has suggested to party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that there is a need to change chiefs in several municipalities in the state, especially in areas where the BJP's performance in the Lok Sabha elections has been affected by Trinamool. It was better than Congress. The General Secretary believes that performance-based restructuring should be done in the party keeping in mind the upcoming 2026 assembly elections.
According to party sources, apart from Purba Medinipur, other districts including Birbhum, Howrah, Hooghly, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri are also in the focus of restructuring. This process of reorganization is likely to begin soon after the by-elections in six assembly constituencies of the state.
Sources said that changes are certain in about 69 municipalities of the state as BJP has got more votes than Trinamool Congress in these urban bodies this year.
