Verse 1: Where is the real abode of God?
Neither devo vidyate be made of wood nor stone nor earth. Bhave hi vidyate devastasmadbhavo hi karanam.

Meaning: Acharya Chanakya says that God neither exists in wood, nor in stone, nor in any beautiful idol of clay. God resides only in man’s inner ‘feelings’, his true faith and sacred devotion, hence the feeling of the mind is the most important reason.

Lesson: Through this verse, Chanakya explains that the real importance of worship or spirituality does not lie in external ostentation or things, but in the true faith, purity and sacred feelings of your mind. Verse 2: The truth about life’s greatest happiness and greatest disease
Shantitulam tapo nasti na santoshatparam sukham. Na Trishnaya Par Vyadhirna Cha Dharma Daya Par: ॥

Meaning: In this verse, Acharya Chanakya says that there is no other penance in the world like mental peace and there is no other happiness greater than satisfaction. Similarly, there is no more terrible disease in life than excessive craving or endless desires (trishna) and there is no nobler religion than having compassion for others.

Lesson: A person does not get true happiness in life from material things, but from inner satisfaction and peace of mind. Man’s limitless and never-ending desires become the biggest cause of his suffering and mental stress. At the same time, the greatest virtue is to have a feeling of kindness and compassion towards every living being.
Verse 3: Identification of the factors causing destruction and creation

Meaning: According to Acharya Chanakya, man’s excessive anger is as destructive as Yamraj, the god of death, and his insatiable lust (greed) is as painful as the river Vaitarani of suffering. On the contrary, knowledge or Vidya is like the Kamdhenu cow which fulfills all the desires of man and satisfaction of the mind gives ultimate happiness like the Nandanvan of heaven.

Lesson: Anger and greed corrupt man’s intellect and lead him straight towards downfall and destruction. On the other hand, acquired true knowledge and contented nature fills a person’s life with happiness, prosperity, opulence and peace.
Verse 4: The real significance of beauty and wealth
Guno bhushayate rupam sheelam bhushayate kulam. Siddhirbhusayate vidyaam bhogi bhusayate dhanam ॥

Meaning: In this last verse, Acharya Chanakya says that the best qualities within a person beautify his external appearance and beauty. The good character and modesty of a person makes his entire clan (family) respected in the society. Similarly, success and humility in life enhances the beauty of one’s knowledge, and wealth becomes meaningful and beautiful only when it is properly used for social welfare and properly consumed for oneself.
