Farmer Success Story: Farmers often complain about weather conditions and low profits in traditional farming (wheat, gram, soybean). But a progressive farmer from Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh has completely changed the way of farming. Amit Jain, a resident of Khimlasa Gram Panchayat, about 70 kilometers from Sagar district headquarters, has set a new and wonderful example in the agriculture sector by adopting ‘Smart Farming’. Amit, who has been doing modern farming of exotic vegetables for the last 5 years, is today earning a net profit of Rs 15 to 20 lakh every season.

Father’s dream made a reality, demand for vegetables reaches Delhi

Amit Jain’s success story is linked to his father’s legacy. Amit’s father was always fond of doing new experiments (innovation) in farming. After the sudden demise of his father, Amit did not let this experiment stop. Initially he started cultivating exotic vegetables on a small scale, but when market understanding and profits increased, he started doing it on a large scale. Today, the premium vegetables grown in Amit’s 5 to 7 acre farm are supplied directly to the famous Azadpur Mandi of Delhi. About 5 quintals of foreign vegetables are sent to Delhi every day from his farm.

‘Foreign gold’ growing in fields, remains in high demand for 12 months

Amit mainly produces those foreign vegetables in his fields, whose demand remains throughout the year in five-star hotels and metro cities. Barring the scorching heat of May and June, they grow these premium vegetables throughout the year through a rotation system. The major crops grown in his fields are as follows:

Broccoli

Brussels Sprouts

Pokchoi or Bok Choy

Chinese Cabbage

Red Lettuce

This modern technology of smart farming is making millionaires

The real secret of Amit Jain’s success lies in his advanced agricultural techniques. To protect the crops from heat and strong sunlight, he has adopted ‘Cover Cropping’ system. Along with this, they use modern ‘bed method’ in the fields.

Mulching and Drip Irrigation: To save water and protect from weeds, mulching film has been installed in the fields and irrigation is completely done through drip system.

Fertigation Method: Spraying of fertilizers and necessary pesticides to the plants is also done through drip system along with water. This not only saves labor costs, but the plants also get the right amount of nutrition.

Complete mathematics of cost and profits (calculation of one acre)

How economically beneficial is the cultivation of foreign vegetables, can be easily understood from this formula of Amit Jain:

Description cost and earnings figure
Total cost per acre Approximately ₹ 1 lakh (from seeds to supplies)
total income from one acre ₹4 lakh to ₹5 lakh
net profit per acre Around ₹3.5 to ₹4 lakh
Total profit on 5 acres ₹15 to ₹20 lakh (per season)

High-quality seeds come from England and Germany

The most important aspect of this profitable farming is ‘selection of good seeds’. Amit believes that there can be no compromise with the quality of seeds. They do not use common seeds for their fields, but seeds imported from countries like England, Germany and China. These seeds reach Khimlasa village through importers from Delhi.

Today Amit Jain has become an inspiration for all those youth and farmers who say that there is no money in farming. Today, on the basis of right technology, selection of foreign crops and understanding of the market, this farmer of Sagar is earning millions.
