A relief news has come for the people living in Meerut. The proposal for widening of one of the busiest roads of the city – from Begumpul to Football Chowk and from there to the bypass – has got the green signal.

Begumpul to Football Chowk: Rejuvenation will cost Rs 15 crore
This is the most crowded area of the city. Traffic crawls here. Now the government has sanctioned Rs 15.76 crore to improve the approximately 2650 meter (more than two and a half kilometre) long road from Begumpul to Football Chowk. Its tender has also been issued, which means the work is expected to start soon.
What will change on the road?
This project involves more than just laying asphalt, but a complete makeover:
- Widening: Presently the width of the road is 7 meters on one side, which can be increased. 8 to 8.50 meters Will be done. This means there will be more space for vehicles to pass.
- Drains will be covered: Open drains on the roadside not only spread foul smell but also cause fear of accidents. In this project, the drains on both sides will be concreted and covered.
- For pedestrians: Interlocking tiles will be installed on the top and sides of the drains, so that pedestrians do not have to come in the middle of the road.
Bypass from Football Chowk: Road will open here also
The traffic jam does not happen only at Begumpul, the situation remains bad even further. Therefore, the administration has also approved widening of the road from Football Chowk to Bypass (Baghpat Road).
According to the plan here:
- The total width of the road is currently 14 meters, which will be increased to 17 meters.
- This means that the road will be expanded by about 1 to 1.5 meters on both sides. Besides, the road will be made beautiful and strong.
