The new mayor of New York, who has Indian blood in his veins: Meet Zohran Mamdani:

A new history has been written in New York City politics. 34-year-old Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has won a landslide victory in the mayoral election held on Wednesday. He left behind two big names in this contest, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Party’s Curtis Sliwa. This victory is not just an electoral victory, but is like a new dawn for New York.

With this victory, Zoharan has made many records in his name. Not only will he be one of New York’s youngest mayors ever, but the city will also get its first Muslim, first South Asian (Indian origin) and first African-born mayor.

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

So who is this Zoharan Mamdani, who has created such a stir in New York politics? Zoharan may have been born in Uganda, but he was raised on the streets of New York. He is the son of famous Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Indian-origin writer Mahmood Mamdani. That means both the blood and art of India run in his veins.

People did not know him much before coming into politics. He was a member of the New York State Assembly and considers himself a ‘Democratic Socialist’, i.e. a leader who emphasizes on government schemes for the rights of the common man. He surprised everyone by defeating a veteran leader like Cuomo in the Democratic primary elections.

Big promises for the common man

Zoharan spent his entire election campaign focusing on the biggest problem facing the common people of New York – rising inflation and cost of living. After becoming mayor, he has made some big and directly impactful promises to the people of the city:

• Now fare will not increase: He has said that the rent of those who live in rented houses will be frozen immediately. Also, affordable government houses will be built so that rents can be further reduced.
• Travel free in city buses: His promise is that fares on all government buses in the city will be abolished forever, so that it becomes cheaper and easier for people to travel.
• No worries about child care: Free childcare (daycare) will be arranged for every child between 6 weeks to 5 years, so that working parents do not face any problem.
• Affordable Grocery Shops: Government grocery shops will be opened in the city. The objective of these shops will not be to earn profits, but to provide cheap ration and food items to the people.
