News India Live, Digital Desk: As soon as we hear the name of Ladakh, the snowy mountains, blue sky and bone-chilling cold come to our mind. Traveling by air here is as exciting as it is difficult, because no one knows when the weather will deteriorate. But now Leh’s ‘Kushok Bakula Rimpoche’ airport is witnessing a big change, which is being discussed all over the world today.

Leh Airport has now become not only the country’s but also one of the few highest airports in the world which will be completely equipped with ‘geothermal’ (ground heat) and solar power.

You will get heat inside the terminal without spending electricity
The biggest challenge in Ladakh is the 6 months of winter, when the temperature drops to -20 or -30 degrees. In such a situation, keeping the entire airport terminal heated was not only expensive but also harmful for the environment. Now a unique ‘desi jugaad’ has been used for this. The natural heat that exists deep below the ground is being used through pipes to maintain the temperature of the terminal. The advantage of this will be that the passenger sitting inside will not feel cold no matter how much it is snowing outside.

Sunlight will also be fully utilized
Ladakh is also called the ‘Land of Sunshine’ because there is bright sunshine most days of the year. Such large solar panels and technology have been installed in the new wing of the airport that it will be able to generate its own electricity. This will reduce carbon emissions and our delicate eco-system will also be safe.

What will change in your journey?
With the new upgradation and expansion of the terminal of Leh Airport, the passenger capacity will now increase manifold. This will provide relief to a great extent from the crowd of passengers and check-in queues that used to be seen in the olden times. Along with this, due to better technology, it will be easier for flights to land safely even when visibility is low, which will also reduce the fear of flight cancellation during winter.
