How many people are infected with rabies?
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) surveyed 60 districts of 15 states across the country from March 2022 to August 2023. During this period, 3,37,808 people in over 78,800 houses were asked about domestic animals bites, anti -rabies vaccines and deaths due to animal bites.

Dogs most responsible
Several researchers, including researchers from ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, have found that dogs are responsible for 3 out of 4 incidents of animal bites.

Estimates of animal bites cases:
More than 2,000 people involved in the survey reported the incidence of previous animals bite, of which 76.8 percent (1,576) were cut by dogs. In addition, the authors of the study said that 6 out of every thousand people have been bitten by an animal, “which means 9.1 million people have been bitten by animals at the national level.”

How many people died of rabies?
