News India Live, Digital Desk: Often whenever someone dies, we have a tradition of reading Garuda Purana. This is not because we want to scare, but so that the path of the departed soul can be cleared and the living people can improve their habits. It is told in Garuda Purana that Yamraj’s palace i.e. Yampuri has four main doors and through which door our soul will enter, it is decided by the work done by us while we are alive.
Four doors of Yampuri: Where does heaven begin and where does hell begin?
- East Gate: This door opens for those whose life was virtuous. If you have meditated religiously throughout your life, respected the sages and gurus and never wished harm to anyone, then your soul enters through this grand and divine door. It is considered the gateway to heaven where one finds ultimate peace.
- North Gate: North direction is considered auspicious. According to Garuda Purana, those who have conquered their senses, who have undertaken pilgrimages or who have sacrificed their lives in the service of society, are taken through this path. Here the soul feels a different positive energy.
- West Gate: This gate is for those who were great donors. If you have sacrificed your money, time and resources to help others, performed auspicious deeds like Annadan and Kanyadaan, then your soul enters through the west door. Here too there is no provision for punishment, rather a peaceful place is provided.
- South Gate: The real fear starts from here. Garuda Purana says that only the south door remains open for sinful and evil spirits. The Yamdoots drag the person who violates the rights of others, tortures the weak and commits grave sins through this dreadful door. This is called ‘the road to hell’, where unbearable torments and regrets begin.
An important message for life
The purpose of these stories is not to scare us, but to make us understand the importance of ‘Karma’. Actually, these four doors are symbols of our good and bad thoughts. Man feels that no one is watching him, but according to Garuda Purana, nature has its own register where the account of every penny is recorded.
No matter what religion or ideology we belong to, in the end our peace of mind depends on how many faces we have brought smile to and how many hearts we have hurt. Garuda Purana simply teaches that sow such good seeds while alive that after death the soul does not have to bear the burden of ‘journey’.
