News India Live, Digital Desk: Young batsman Shubman Gill has made his intentions clear as soon as he took over the captaincy of the Indian Test team. Ahead of the crucial home series against England, Gill has put forward a new and clear strategy on the team’s biggest headache, i.e. the workload management of the fast bowlers. He has made it clear that he will have complete trust in his bowlers and will give them complete freedom to listen to their bodies.

“Bowlers like Bumrah know what they want.”

When Gill was asked how he would manage the workload of important bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, he gave a very convincing answer. He said, “To be honest, it completely depends on them. They have to understand their body best. When you look at experienced bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah or Ishant Sharma, they know how their body is feeling and when they need rest.”

Gill believes that the captain’s job is not to impose decisions on the bowlers, but to constantly talk to them and understand their needs. “This (workload management) is a conversation that will always be ongoing between us,” he said.

Bowlers will get freedom to take decisions

Captain Gill has a clear message that if any bowler feels that he needs rest or is not feeling 100% fit, then he can say so without hesitation. “If they feel they need a break, they’ll take a break. If they feel they’re ready to play, they’ll play. It’s that simple,” Gill said.

This is a new and modern style of captaincy, where the captain is expressing confidence in his players not like a boss, but like a leader.

India will need its key fast bowlers the most in the long five-match Test series against England. In such a situation, Gill’s “player-first” approach will ensure that match-winning bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj remain fresh and fit for the entire series. This is a sign of a good change for Indian cricket, where the fitness and opinion of the players is being kept at the top.
