Tension in SMC due to BJP protest, clash with police

Siliguri, May 31 (HS). On Friday, BJP took out a rally in Siliguri on the issue of drinking water. BJP's rally tried to enter Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC). Siliguri police stopped it at the corporation gate. When the protesters tried to forcibly enter the corporation, they clashed with the police. Due to which a lot of tension spread in the area.

It is noteworthy that the drinking water supplied by SMC is not fit for drinking. Mayor Gautam Dev had appealed to the citizens two days ago not to drink the said water. After this announcement by the mayor, there was a stir in Siliguri. On this issue of drinking water, CPI (M) had protested in the SMC premises on Thursday. CPI (M) workers and supporters had surrounded Mayor Gautam Dev and protested fiercely.

On this issue, BJP held a protest in Siliguri on Friday. The protest was led by opposition leader Amit Jain. Other BJP councillors, BJP Yuva Morcha and Mahila Morcha workers and supporters were present there.

In the afternoon, hundreds of BJP workers and supporters reached SMC after holding a rally. The plan was to submit a memorandum to Mayor Gautam Dev. After receiving prior information about the BJP protest, Siliguri Police Commissionerate deployed a large number of police forces in front of the main gate of SMC.

The police stopped the BJP rally right in front of the gate. Due to which a scuffle broke out between the BJP and the police. When BJP workers tried to forcefully enter, a clash broke out between the police and the BJP workers. When the BJP workers tried to burn the effigy of the mayor in front of the gate after being stopped by the police, the police stopped them too. After which the BJP protesters sat on the road in front of the gate. The BJP protest that went on for hours was finally pacified by the police.
