Snubbed by the US and Iran, Army Chief and Shehbaz Sharif now seek refuge with Xi Jinping

The condition of Pakistan, which is dreaming of reducing the growing military tension between America and Iran and becoming a ‘mediator’ between the two superpowers, has deteriorated on the international stage. Neither America is seriously listening to Islamabad’s views nor have Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir together succeeded in bringing Iran to the negotiating table. After facing trouble from both sides on the diplomatic front, Pakistan has now turned to its evergreen friend China to overcome this crisis.

According to the latest report of Chinese state television, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif along with his Army Chief General Asim Munir has also reached Beijing. Here the duo of Sharif and Munir are holding closed-door meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other top communist officials to find a middle path on this serious international issue. This visit is also very important strategically because just before coming to Beijing, General Asim Munir was on a very secret visit to Iran.

Secret meeting of Pakistani Army Chief held in Tehran

On Friday and Saturday, just before flying to Beijing, General Asim Munir along with Pakistan Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi suddenly and without any pre-planned visit to Iran’s capital Tehran. Here he held several rounds of secret meetings with Iran’s top political leadership and powerful military commanders.

According to reports from defense sources, the main objective of this secret visit was to get Tehran’s consent to the 30-day ceasefire draft jointly prepared by Qatar and Pakistan. However, there was no very positive response to this proposal from Iran, after which the Pakistani leadership had to immediately turn to China.

The whole world is at a critical juncture, things are in the right direction: Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the current global situation after a high-level meeting with Chinese officials in Beijing. Emphasizing the need for talks, PM Sharif said, “The entire world is currently passing through a very delicate and historic juncture. Pakistan has always played an honest and neutral role in mediating between the US and Iran. Our Field Marshal (Army Chief) himself was assessing the ground reality in Tehran and did not want to abandon this important diplomatic effort at any cost.”

Shahbaz Sharif also expressed his gratitude to the Chinese leadership for cooperation in this time of crisis. He further said, “Now things are slowly moving in the right direction. I would like to thank China for its active cooperation in promoting peace in the Middle East.” It is noteworthy that Beijing has also indicated that it is fully ready to make any positive contribution to stop this war and reach a settlement.

Pakistan is only making name, China is making real efforts

A bitter reality in this whole incident is that even though Pakistan is trying to tie the knot of mediation, but behind the scenes, the real diplomatic push is being made by China. Since the beginning of the war, Beijing has been working in silent mode to resolve this war. Last month, Pakistan had also called a big international meeting in Islamabad to bring about reconciliation between America and Iran, which was completely inconclusive.

Earlier, in the first 10 days of ceasefire between the two countries, the real role was played by China. According to intelligence reports, China’s top diplomats had put pressure on Iranian officials by making more than 20 phone calls, only then Tehran agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

India’s concern increased due to stoppage of oil supply, how will things be resolved?

Here, due to no final deal between America and Iran and repeated stalling of talks, the clouds of crisis over global oil supply have deepened. Crude oil prices are continuously skyrocketing in the international market. The ‘Strait of Hormuz’, which is considered most important for maritime trade, has not yet been fully opened, due to which the economic concerns of many Asian countries including India have increased.

The main reason for this impasse is that while Iran is accusing America of imposing illegitimate and unilateral conditions, America clearly says that Washington will not sign any agreement until Tehran completely brakes its nuclear program. However, amid all this, a statement by US President Donald Trump has raised hopes, in which he has claimed that some main issues have been agreed upon with Iran and soon a big ‘good news’ will be in front of the world.
